MODULE 1: GETTING READY TO LEARN

TRANSITION FROM SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY

There are many differences between school and university. For example:

At school all the knowledge and information will be fed to you. But in the university, you need to find it yourself. In conclusion, despite these two main differences between university and school, each provides great learning opportunities to students 😊.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

1. Attend All Classes 🤓

One of the best ways to be successful in college is to attend all classes. Although you will be tested on material from the course text, most of the test questions will come from lectures.

2. Become an Active Learner✍️

Unlike high school, in college, you can't learn all of the material just reading over it a couple of times. You need to write and recite the information to get it into long-term memory.

3. Participate in Class👩‍🏫

If you feel a bit uncomfortable participating in class, set a goal to either ask or answer one question during each class. Once you begin participating, you'll feel more a part of the class and will become more actively involved in the learning process.

4. Get to Know Your Lecturers🗣

Take a few minutes and stop to talk with your lecturer before or after class or during office hours. Ask a question about the material or check on your progress in the course. If you get to know your instructors, you may feel more comfortable asking for help when you need it.

5. Form Study Groups with Friends👍🏻

Study Groups of about 3-4 people are known to be very effective. However, make sure that you include friends who are serious about doing well in their studies, because only then they will contribute.

6. Stay Up to Date with Your Work📝

Many new college students have difficulty keeping up with all of the reading that's assigned in class. If you get behind in your reading, you may never have time to catch up. The workload in college just increases as the semester progresses.

7. Be Receptive to Change 💬

If the strategies that you used in high school aren't working, ask you lecturer or tutor for suggestions for different ways to learn. Even though the strategies that they suggest may not seem like they'll work, you must be willing to give them a chance. If you don't make changes in the way you take notes, read your texts or prepare for exams, for example, you won't see changes in your performance.

8. Work Hard This Semester 💪🏻

Forget about doing all your assignments in the evening. If you're taking fifteen credits this semester, you'll need a minimum of thirty hours (two hours outside of class for every hour in class) to do your work. If you want high grades, if you work slowly or if you're taking difficult courses, you'll need more time to do your work well.

LEARNING STYLES TO EXCHANCE PERFORMANCE

Learning has many ways and not everyone has the same style. I will explain to you three types of learning styles which are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Each one of them has a different learning style.

1. Visual 👁

- Visual learners. These students always use their sight to see the information to     remember better. They learn by reading and seeing things. By doing that, they   can picture what they learn in their head, and they like to note.

2. Auditory 🔊

-Usually, auditory learners learn by hearing and listening. They tend to understand and remember things that they heard. Also, they can store information by the way it sounds and better than the written one.

3. Kinesthetics 👋🏻

-Students who possess this learning style tend to learn by manipulating material and things. The also like to do practical work. Mostly, students with these types of learning spend more time studying hands-on manner things and solving problems rather than hearing lectures or reading books.

My Learning Style Inventory

Based on the learning style inventory results, I’ve got the highest score for visual and same score for auditory styles and kinesthetic style. This test has revealed that I am a visual learner, which means that visualization is the most effective way for me to study. To study, I can learn through reading and viewing a video.

MODULE 2: GOAL SETTING AND LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

WRITING EFFECTIVE GOAL STATEMENT - THE FIVE-STEP APPROACH

20 % of what we HEAR

30 % of what we SEE

50 % of what we SEE AND HEAR

70 % of what we SAY

90 % of what we SAY AND DO

Long Term Memory:

- Can retain information for a long period of time

MODULE 5: TAKING LECTURE NOTES

1. WHY TAKING LECTURE NOTES?

PROMOTES ACTIVE LEARNING

⭆PROVIDES AN ACCURATE RECORD OF INFORMATION

CONDENSE AND ORGANIZE INFORMATION

⭆PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR REPETITION OF THE MATERIAL

2. HOW TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

MODULE 6: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE

WHAT IS ACADEMIC INTEGRITY?

Academic integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship.

↪Academic assignments exist to help students learn; grades exist to show how fully this goal is attained.

↪Therefore all work and all grades should result from the student's own understanding and effort.

Plagiarism:
An act or using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.

COMMON WAYS TO USE INFORMATION FROM A SOURCE

  • Quoting- using the exact words of someone else and putting them in quotation marks.

  • Paraphrasing- to put someone else's ideas in your own words and including a citation to the original source.
